Week 34: Oct 27-Nov 2

NUMBERS OF THE WEEK

STEPS: 4370

I’m not proud of this. I feel like a sloth and I need to make more of an effort to get out. I did go on some walks, but they were countered by days of complete inactivity.

WEIGHT: Did not count

I haven’t been going to my WW weigh-ins. Partly because I am not ready to face it, but also because of circumstances: covid, work, etc. Next week for sure. . . . . I need to reverse this slide and start climbing back out of the hole.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK

HALLOWEEN

I’m not sure I ever took notice before, but in recent years it seems that people are decorating for Halloween earlier and more elaborately than I remember. For example, I was in the US over Labor Day Weekend and there were already homes decked out with skeleton’s and ghosts, spider webs and gravestones. This week I went for a walk with my niece on a gorgeous fall day where the crispy leaves were just waiting to be kicked and strewn about everywhere. We walked down a street in the West End and a significant number of homes were decorated for Halloween. We never did this growing up-but starting next year I am going to make a new tradition. I want to start enjoying everything life has to offer and Halloween is really fun!!!

ALBUM OF THE WEEK

Raye: My 21st Century Blues

Raye is unique. Gorgeous and sultry, but also real and vulnerable. Her voice is captivating and I can’t believe it has taken me this long to listen to her. This album is her debut and was released in early 2023 to critical acclaim, including some Brit Awards. Each time I listened to it there was more to uncover with every song. Listen to it with headphones while you’re making dinner and I promise you will enjoy that mundane task.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

Lessons in Chemistry By Bonnie Garmus

I absolutely loved this book! The characters are engaging and the writing is so clever. One thing I love is a debut novel, especially written by a woman, that is an instant hit. It’s like they were meant for this moment. Such is the case with Bonnie Garmus, who was a copyright editor prior to writing this novel. It is about Elizabeth Zott, a quirky chemist in the 1950’s who is oblivious to social mores and striving to be taken as a serious scientist in the male dominated laboratory where she works. She gains the admiration of an equally eccentric Nobel-nominated Chemist Dr Calvin Evans and what unfolds is an unconventional love story. She is brilliant and aloof and easily endears the reader due to her naivety and captures the hearts of women all over America. There is a message of perseverance despite the odds and remaining true to yourself. What we always need to remember!!
