HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK: Time off
I had this week off and I did nothing. I didn’t set an alarm. I didn’t make a list. It was lovely. No goals. Just rest. It was exactly what I needed!
BOOK OF THE WEEK
Salem’s Lot by Stephen King
I started reading Stephen King when I was in High School, and always had a fondness for the ‘horror’ genre. I would devour his books while babysitting, often preferring them to television sitcoms. I loved to be spooked.
Salem’s Lot, King’s second novel was published in 1975, the year I was born. The novel centers around Ben Mears, a writer who returns to his hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot, Maine to finish writing a novel and confronting traumatic childhood memories from a mysterious experience at the Martsen House. He is not the only outsider who has arrived in ‘Salem’s Lot’ though. Two antique dealers, Straker and Barlow, recently purchased the enigmatic Martsen House for the purpose of selling their wares. With all these newcomers in town, there is perfect fodder for gossip, especially when a young boy disappears and other folks start dying with no explanation.
The novel is a chilling tale of Vampires taking over this small town in Maine and turning the towns’ folk into their own army. It is full of gory details and horrifying images. I only WISH I read this book back then-it is awesome and terrifying.
